Uncovering Facts

By Kris Provenzano

In my last post, I mentioned we would talk about GPRs. In September, under the supervision of archaeologist Ian Burrow, OSBM contracted Epi Geophysics of Cream Ridge, a company that performs GPRs. A GPR is a geophysical method that uses radar pulses to image the surface. It is a non-intrusive method of surveying what’s underground. Epi is busy analyzing the data from their recent Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey at the Old School Baptist. They examined six separate areas within the limits of the original 1747 graveyard around the Meetinghouse. Two locations were scanned that do not have gravestones, to see if there is evidence for unmarked graves. In addition, the areas adjoining the east and north sides of the Meetinghouse were examined to check for underground utilities and other features near the building. Preliminary analysis shows several features of various kinds in the surveyed areas, but detailed interpretation must wait until some other data is incorporated.

An update will be presented at the December 13th event co-sponsored by the Hopewell Public Library Speaker Series, The Hopewell Valley Historical Society, and the Hopewell Museum.  The Old School Baptist Meeting of Hopewell: New Research, Investigations and Plans (7pm at the Hopewell Presbyterian Church).
